Visitor Information
Parris Island Geography and History
Parris Island , South Carolina, consists of 8,095 acres, of which only 3,262 are habitable. The remaining acres are primarily salt marsh. Enlisted male training began here in November 1915. Enlisted female training began here in February 1949.

Marines have trained on the Depot during each major conflict of the 20th century:
  • WWI – 41,000 recruits
  • WWII – 205,000 recruits
  • Korean War – 138,000 recruits
  • Vietnam War – 250,000 recruits
Visitors and Graduation

Parris Island is one of the most visited military facilities in the world, hosting more than 120,000 visitors a year. This translates into a significant economic impact for surrounding communities.

Most visitors come to attend the recruit Graduation Ceremony.

Visitors to graduations at Marine Corps Recruit Depot,Parris Island can find lodging, dining, tours and attractions in nearby Beaufort, Port Royal and Bluffton. Please view detailed listings at the following link or contact the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center at 843-986-5400.

As the headquarters of the Eastern Recruiting Region and recruit training for all females and males east of the Mississippi River, we expect to provide only the best experiences possible for our visitors.

Parris Island also extends its hospitality to Community Organizations that may wish to visit as a group.

Vehicle operators must possess:

  • A valid driver's license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof of automobile insurance
The nearest major airports to Parris Island are the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) and the Hilton Head Airport (HHH). The next closest airport is the Charleston International Airport (CHS). Transportation from these airports is not provided, however both airports have rental car agencies. Family Day & Graduation Ceremony
Family day and graduation take place on the last two days of recruit training. Family Day occurs Thursday and gives new Marines a chance to see family and friends for the first time during on-base liberty. more

Parris Island Tours (revised 01/10/08)
Bus tours are provided at 11 a.m. on Family Day , which is the Thursday prior to recruit graduations. Visitors may get tickets for the tours at the Visitors’ Center any time after 7:30 a.m. on Family Day. Seating is limited, reserve yours early. You may also tour selected areas such as the Parris Island Museum on your own.

Special Needs
Those visitors who require wheelchairs may want to bring one of their own, as the Visitors’ Center has a limited number for loan. Individuals with impaired hearing who require a sign language interpreter for graduation should contact the Visitor's Center as far in advance as possible (30 days) before graduation.
