Important Warning: Fraud-Scam concerning CLEP study materials
The Education Offices at both MCRD & MCAS offer a wide array of tests that are available to all armed forces at no cost to active duty. We are also available to proctor exams for universities. This service is free for active duty but can also be utilized by retired service members, family members, and civilians that work on base. Below is a listing of tests offered and a brief overview. If you would like more information or to schedule a test please contact the Education Offices.
ACT
The ACT (American College Testing) assessment consists of four tests that measure academic development in English, mathematics, reading, and science. It is available only to active duty and funded only one time by the military. The cost if not funded is $29.00. Study guides are available in the base libraries.
ASVAB
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a comprehensive test that measures knowledge of science, math, vocabulary, reading, mechanics, electronics, auto mechanics, and clerical skills. This test is used by all branches of the military as a predictor of success when working in a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). Study guides are available in the base libraries.
CLEP
The College Level Examination Program offers 90 minute tests you can take in order to obtain college credit. CLEP consists of a series of examinations that test an individual’s college level knowledge gained through course work, independent study, cultural pursuits, travel, special interests, military service schools, and professional development. The Education Offices offer 14 of the 35 CLEP tests available. Visit your education office for a list of CLEP tests available and study materials.
DLAB
The Defense Language Aptitude Battery is a test the military services use to measure a service member’s ability to learn a foreign language.
DLPT
The DLPT (Defense Language Proficiency Test) is designed for individuals who are already fluent in a specific foreign language needed by the military.
DSST
DANTES Subject Standardized Tests are very similar to the CLEP tests except that DSSTs are un-timed. Visit your education office for a complete list of DSST tests available or for study guides, visit web site.
EXCELSIOR
Excelsior College Examinations are used to meet specific college degree requirements of the Excelsior College degrees and are accepted for college credit by over 900 colleges and universities.
GED
The GED (General Education Diploma) examination is for individuals who have not completed their formal high school education. The GED Tests measure knowledge in five different areas: Language Arts, Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. An important feature of the GED Test is an essay that documents the ability to write and communicate effectively.
GRE
We offer only the GRE (Graduation Record Examination) subject tests. For those looking to take the GRE General Test please visit www.gre.org
PRAXIS
PRAXIS I & PRAXIS II are offered to those who are looking to pursue a career in teaching. There is a great deal of information concerning these tests, so please call the Education Office for more info. These tests are available only to active duty in CONUS.
SAT
The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a reasoning test that consists of 10 sections that measure critical reading, mathematics, and writing. It is available only to active duty and funded only once by the military. The cost if not funded is $41.50. Study guides are available in the base libraries.
TABE
The TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) measures an individual’s knowledge of math, reading, language, and spelling. This test is used to qualify an active duty member with an ASVAB GT score of 99 or below for tuition assistance, as well as the Military Academic Skills Program (MASP) and the Online Academic Skills Course (OASC).
