Alcohol: #1 Drug Problem In America
April is Alcohol Awareness Month. Be aware.
Financial Impact: Each year the liquor industry spends almost $2 billion dollars on advertising encouraging the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Americans spend over $90 billion dollars total on alcohol each year. That is a great return on the liquor industry’s investment! Have you ever thought of what you could do with that kind of money?
Death & Injury: Alcohol not only affects your cash flow, it also impacts your family. 80% of all domestic disputes are alcohol-related. Alcohol is involved in 50% of all driving fatalities. 40% of all suicide attempts are alcohol-related.
Responsible Drinking: Semper Fit Health Promotions will implement ‘That Guy’ campaign in April, which was developed for the DoD to get the word out about drinking responsibly. Although “That Guy” uses some humor to get your attention, it has a serious message that is intended to get your interest-- to help promote responsible drinking and accountability. For more information call 843/228-7010. |

Marine Fit’ & Functional Fitness
by Harriet Fisher, Fitness Coordinator
Functional training is not just about muscle hypertrophy or muscle strength; it is also about injury reduction and performance improvements. These improvements are gained through progressive exercises that increase in demand yet decrease in injuries. Functional training is not a fad. It has been developed from increased knowledge in human rehabilitation and the understanding that more value is found in functional strength than in the outdated concept of the one rep max.
Marine Fit
The Marines have earned a respected place in the world of physical fitness and have become recognized as leaders in all aspects of physical fitness. Our support starts by acknowledging the importance of combat readiness physiologically and psychologically, and continues by offering support towards more thorough preparation for the conflicts of war.
Both MCCS fitness facilities have a designated board for placement of information related to physical fitness that may be of greater interest to the active duty Marine. Marine Fit is a “series curriculum.” We will post examples of 6-week programs that include functional training for warm-ups, torso, lower body, upper body, plyometrics and (in some cases) Olympic lifting.
Whether you choose to participate in the Navy Seal designed TRX Suspension System, P90X, CrossFit Program, PFT and CFT preparatory training, Post-Rehabilitative Conditioning, or Athletic & Sports Conditioning, functional fitness concepts can support your training goals.
Matching individuals with appropriate conditioning activities-- thus matching conditioning activities to intended goals and outcomes-- best prepares us for success.
Our personal trainers can answer your exercise questions, and are also available by appointment for training individuals or groups. Please stop by the fitness centers or contact your trainers for more information. Please remember to contact your physician before starting an exercise program.
TRX
(New to Your Fitness Centers!)
The TRX (Total-Body Resistance Exercise) fitness system is now available to you, Marines, at both fitness centers. TRX was developed in the late 1990’s by the Navy SEALS as a way to maintain fitness when time was short and gyms weren’t available. The system is made of heavy duty nylon strapping, weighs about two pounds, and folds up to about the size of a running shoe. This simple piece of equipment fuses strength training, balance, coordination, and core stability to ensure that the user gets the most out of every workout. It helps to target deep abdominal muscles, increasing spinal support and rotational power, both of which are very important in improving performance and reducing/preventing injury. By using your body weight as resistance, the difficulty level of a workout can be adjusted-- from beginner to advanced to super athlete-- by taking a few steps forwards or backwards. With over 300 documented multiplane exercises, you are limited only by imagination and ability.
Contact the personal trainers at MCAS Beaufort 228-6372 or MCRD Parris Island 228-1562/1563) for a TRX consultation or to reserve your own system. |

Shocking, (heart)Breaking News
Headline news from The Legends Golf Course…Junior Golfer Turns Down $630.00!
Hopefully this tragic tale doesn’t apply to your son or daughter, but it is a true story. During the final weekend of March, The Legends golf course hosted a junior golf tournament conducted by the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT). Ninety-four boys and girls from around the globe came to Parris Island to compete for pride and recognition, compiling points for their national ranking in the junior golf world. But it doesn’t come cheap. The annual membership fee to join the IJGT is $225 and the entry fee for this particular event was $405! However, the IJGT agreed to a one-time waiver of their membership fee and MCCS agreed to donate the $405 entry fee to a son or daughter of any MCRD or MCAS military personnel who shoots the lowest score in a qualifying event. Here’s the tragedy…only two juniors showed up for the qualifier! We tried our best to market this event by distributing fliers and sending out an “all hands” email, but I guess it wasn’t enough. Maybe it was too intimidating for some or maybe everyone was out of town that weekend. But I believe the reason is that we just don’t have very many junior golfers at our club, which in my opinion is the biggest tragedy.
Across the country and around the world, the number of junior golfers, unlike adult golfers, is on the rise. If you think that this increase in junior golf is only among the financially elite (a theory I can understand when considering the above-mentioned entry fees!), then you will appreciate this bit of news. Tom Weslake and I will be conducting four junior golf camps this summer and they will be very affordable. The “Junior Legends” camp will be offered June 16-19 and July 8-11 from 0800 – 1300. This is a great introduction to the game and will feature instruction on the driving range and putting green, golf fitness at the Parris Island gymnasium and golf games at the swimming pool. For the intermediate to advanced golfer, the “Junior Masters” camp will be offered June 23-27 and July 14-18 from 0800 – 1500. This will feature swing instruction on the driving range and putting green, golf fitness at the gymnasium and playing lessons on the golf course. The fee is $125 for the “Junior Legends” camp and $150 for the “Junior Masters” camp, both of which includes lunch, prizes and bag tags for all campers. Please give me a call or email to receive a registration form for your son or daughter.

As for the qualifying tournament, both Josh Fickes and Billy Ferrell can be proud of their efforts. Josh went on to win the 18-hole qualifier and represented Parris Island in the 11-12 year old division. The Beaufort Gazette featured a front page story about the golf tournament and, according to the article, Josh was not too happy with his first round score of 87. But he came back the next day with an 85, which is very impressive considering the cold and windy weather. One of the highlights of the first day was an appearance by Hank Haney, the swing coach of Tiger Woods! Hank was on his way down to Orlando to work with Tiger in preparation for the Masters. It was interesting to note that he spent most of the afternoon working with the players on the practice putting green, not the driving range. Hmmmm.
I realize that it is going to take more than a few summer camps and clinics to create a strong junior program at The Legends, but it’s a good place to start. The game of golf is a lifetime sport with an endless lesson plan for bored kids. Next year, I hope we have full field of students for the IJGT qualifying tournament. That would make a nice headline for a story, wouldn’t it?

APPRECIATION DAY Wrap Up
I’m sorry if you missed the recent Retiree Appreciation Day held on MCAS Beaufort. ‘Fightertown’ gave the retirees an outstanding reception. The base paper, “The Jet Stream,” made our visit its front page news. Lunch at the Officers’ Club was great and afterwards the Public Affairs Office arranged for three events. First was an up close static display of Marine Fighter Squadron 251 F-18 planes and the Marines who just returned from real-world deployment. Next we went on to view the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting exhibition. The last event was a demonstration of the Provost Marshal’s Office’s military working dogs (everyone loved the dogs). We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. The next Retiree Appreciation will be held on Parris Island and the Retiree Seminar will be conducted at the end of November 2008. Be sure not to miss the up coming events. Watch for details! |

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY UPDATE
An enlisted service member killed in battle and posthumously awarded the Silver Star for heroism is rendered lesser honors at Arlington National Cemetery than an officer who dies in a car crash the day after being commissioned. That statement took officials at several veterans’ organizations by surprise. But it is true: Burial honors at Arlington, the nation’s most storied military cemetery and home of the Tomb of the Unknowns, are accorded strictly by rank, not by the circumstances of death. “That is the custom that has been prescribed,” said Jack Metzler, the superintendent at Arlington for the past 17 years. Most enlisted troops receive “standard honors” — military pallbearers, a firing party led by a noncommissioned officer, a bugler and, on request, a chaplain. All others receive variations on “full honors,” which also include a horse-drawn caisson, a band and, if requested, escort troops. The only enlisted troops who may receive full honors are those in the highest enlisted grade, E-9. Medal of Honor recipients, regardless of rank, also rate the caisson in addition to standard honors. The two types of funerals are dramatically different. The issue has been raised that Honors rendered should be rendered fairly, based on actions, not rank and the present custom is due for a change.

DIET & EXERCISE MYTHS
Many common diet and exercise myths could SLOW your weight loss. Every year, millions of Americans resolve to lose weight, whether on New Year's Day, their birthdays, or just some morning when their mirror or the bathroom scale seems particularly unkind. And every year, many get frustrated and give up before they reach their goals. Contributing to this problem is a host of bad information about diet and exercise that circulates through gyms, workplaces, and over the Internet. To help more people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, Julie Bender, a dietitian with Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, and Phil Tyne, director of the Baylor Tom Landry Health and Wellness Center agreed to "weigh in" on ten of the most common diet and exercise myths. |
Myth #1: Crunches will get rid of your belly fat.
Myth #2. Stretching before exercise is crucial.
Myth #3. You should never eat before a workout.
Myth #4. Lifting weights will make women bulky
Myth #5. Fat is bad for you, no matter what kind.
Myth #6. Restricting calories is the best way to lose weight.
Myth #7. As long as you eat healthy foods, you can eat as much as you want.
Myth #8. Exercise turns fat into muscle.
Myth #9. Eating late at night will make you gain weight.
Myth #10. You have to sweat to have a good workout. |

MISSOURI RETIREE TAX EXEMPTION: Military retirees in Missouri might have a state tax cut coming, if lawmakers go along with a proposal by Gov. Matt Blunt. The governor proposed to eliminate the state income tax on military pensions for tens of thousands of veterans in Missouri. Veteran's officials said the tax cut was one of their priorities. Of the 41 states that have an income tax, 12 do not tax military pensions, including neighboring Illinois.

OHIO STATE TAX EXEMPTION: Recently passed Ohio legislation exempts military retirement pay from Ohio personal income tax and exempts estates of armed forces members who died while serving in combat zones from probate fees. The legislation also extends the 20% credit available to certain military persons on civil service examinations to any member of the National Guard or a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an order of the President or an act of Congress.

IRS AUDIT
The most common form of audit from Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is by letter. A letter audit usually comes in duplicate. It informs the taxpayer about the problem, a time limit to resolve the problem and a contact person for discussing the problem. The IRS can cause Americans, even those overseas, difficulties. It can penalize and charge interest against unpaid taxes, attach property for unpaid taxes, and impede re-entry into the US for unpaid taxes. So if you received a notice from IRS, deal immediately with it. Keep copies of whatever you send to the IRS. Gather records from copies that pertain to the notice. Respond promptly to the notice. Note the name of the auditor, badge number and subject matter of any conversation you have with an auditor (who may not be the one listed on the notice). If you ask a tax professional for help resolving an IRS notice, be sure to describe the problem, send a copy of the notice, provide Power of Attorney, and sign an Engagement Agreement. Most IRS notices are routine. A tax return has not been received or signed. A tax payment has been improperly credited. A math error has been made. So don't panic!

VA BURIAL BENEFIT UPDATE
Often survivors are disappointed when they seek reimbursement of burial expenses for departed veterans. This is because retirees have not informed their loved ones what to do and how much to expect. Read more about this: http://www.cem.va.gov/cem/bbene_burial.asp
